HelpLine Executive Director Susan Hanson Announces Retirement, After 29 Years

After 29 years of distinguished service, HelpLine Executive Director Susan Hanson announced that she will retire in January 2025.

Hanson has been a pivotal figure in the growth and success of HelpLine upon joining the organization as its Clinical Director in 1995 then taking the helm as Executive Director in 1997, solidifying its reputation as the community’s front door and go-to organization.

Under her leadership, the organization has achieved numerous milestones, including being the first agency in the State of Ohio to publicly launch 211, the crisis support and referral line to local community resources, supported the growth of Delaware county’s only volunteer agency, Connections Volunteer Center, that has evolved to serve older adults to reduce isolation & promote emotional wellness through volunteerism, formed the Sexual Assault Response Network (SARN) for survivors of sexual assault across five counties, assisted in establishing the Delaware County Suicide Prevention Coalition, expanding the agency’s footprint to eight counties and partnered with the local Delaware Morrow Mental Health & Recovery Board and fellow behavioral health agencies to establish trauma-informed programs such as the Crisis Engagement Coordination program designed to increase access to behavioral health care for those experiencing mental health crisis all to advance the mission of HelpLine.

Her leadership has also included implementing the successful rollout of 988, the national suicide and crisis lifeline, at HelpLine ensuring staff training, certifications and protocols were in place to assist callers with live-saving services.

Throughout her tenure, Hanson has demonstrated unwavering dedication, tireless work, and inspiring leadership, leaving an indelible mark on the organization and the community it serves.

Her visionary approach and commitment to HelpLine’s core vision of thriving communities full of hope, help and healing have significantly contributed to the betterment of countless lives.

Hanson remarked, “It has been an honor and a privilege to serve this incredible organization and work alongside such passionate and committed individuals. I am proud of all we have accomplished together and look forward to watching HelpLine continue to thrive and make a difference.”

The HelpLine Board of Directors, led by chair Jane Martin, contracted with Benefactor to conduct a comprehensive search for a new Executive Director who will build on the strong foundation laid by Hanson. Details of the transition plan and the search process will be communicated in the coming weeks. We invite the community to join us in celebrating Hanson’s legacy and contributions at an event later this year. Information on upcoming tributes in her honor will be shared soon.
