April is Sexual Assault Awareness (SAAM) and Child Abuse Prevention Month (CAP) – Community Events promote Awareness

2013 SAAM and CAP

Approximately 1 in 10 children experience child sexual abuse before their 18th birthday. In up to 90% of all child sexual abuse cases, the child knew the offender. “We find in many cases of child sexual abuse a perpetrator typically doesn’t act only once and we may hear of more cases. Even if we don’t hear of more cases, we understand that this issue is a complex one, that causes big ripples in our community, and many people may be affected by this. We want everyone in our community know we have support and resources available whether they are involved in a present crisis or if the abuse happened years ago. A child should never be held responsible for an adult’s inappropriate actions.” says Sue Hanson, HelpLine’s Executive Director.

During this month, HelpLine of Delaware and Morrow Counties, Inc. (HelpLine) offers programming to raise public awareness and educate our communities on how to prevent sexual violence and child abuse including a photo campaign by Nora Flanagan, HelpLine Sexual Assault Response Network Coordinator, “Why I serve sexual assault survivors…” – click here to view the gallery.
