Seniors we need your help!
Connections Volunteer Center is looking for adults age 60 and older to give a little of their time to make a big difference in the lives of some Delaware 5th graders by becoming a Pen Pal.
Connections Volunteer Center, a program of HelpLine of Delaware and Morrow Counties, Inc., has partnered once again with The Center for Older Adults and Willis Intermediate School to provide an intergenerational Pen Pal Book Club. This year’s book, Shooting the Moon, is an award winning novel that follows the main character as she grows up in a military family during the Vietnam War. Adults who can share life experiences from during this time will have a powerful and enriching effect on further bringing the themes of the book to life. Pen pals can choose to correspond via mail or email and will write a total of six letters during two consecutive sessions to take place January through April.
This year we need an additional eight volunteers age 60 or older to successfully match 100% of interested students. Connections is hosting an orientation for volunteers on December 10th at The Center for Older Adults.
“The Pen Pal program is a gift to both the student and the senior volunteer.” Says Suzanne Pingry, Connections Program Director. “To connect two very different generations creates opportunity for a unique bond and sharing. The end of year celebration is always a heartwarming experience to finally meet the person you have only known through writing.”
If you are interested please contact Melinda Metz at 740-363-5000, all interested volunteers must be available to attend the orientation meeting, May celebration and complete an application and background check.
