Walk the Extra Mile to Prevent Suicide – September 8, 2012
DELAWARE, OH – Did you know that over 36,000 deaths a year are attributed to suicide in the United States?
Over 1,100 of those tragic deaths occur in Ohio. September 9-15th is the 38th Annual National Suicide
Prevention Week. Together, as a community, we have the opportunity to promote awareness that suicide is a
public health problem that is preventable.
In recognition of Suicide Prevention Week 2012, HelpLine, in partnership with the Delaware Suicide Prevention
Coalition, will host their 2nd Annual Suicide Prevention Walk on Saturday, September 8, 2012, from 10am –
11:30am.The one-mile walk through downtown Delaware will begin at the Ohio Wesleyan University Jaywalk
located at the Northeast corner of the RW Corns Building. The first 100 people will receive FREE water bottles
and T-Shirts to thank them for their time and dedication to suicide awareness. There will also be a healing
balloon release at the end of the walk to celebrate the memories of loved ones who have died from suicide.
The walk is family friendly and safe for all ages!
“There is hope that we can prevent suicide. Hope that treatment can and does work. Hope that by gathering
together as a community we can raise awareness to save lives” said Max Lencl, HelpLine’s Suicide Prevention
Coordinator. Together, we can reduce the number of lives shaken by a needless and tragic death.
