HelpLine WORKS! Morrow County Student Saves a Life After HelpLine Suicide Prevention Training
By Max Lencl, Suicide Prevention Program Director
A semester after going through HelpLine’s Red Flags Depression & Suicide Awareness Program, a middle school student in Morrow county found a need to use his help seeking skills sooner than he thought. The student had known that a friend was going through a hard time but once the friend indicated that he had plans to end his life the student knew he had to act. The Red Flags program has a strong emphasis on contacting trusted adults to get immediate help even when a student is unsure and that is exactly what he did. The student texted the mother of the at-risk friend to let her know exactly why he was concerned. The mother thanked the student and contacted the school counselor and her son. Soon after, an intervention occurred and the student is now more connected and receiving the help he needed.
